Root canal treatment (also called Endodontics) is needed when the pulp inside your tooth becomes infected through tooth decay or damaged by an injury to your mouth. Endodontics or Root canal therapy can save your teeth from severe decay, extreme discomfort, and ultimate extraction. Please contact Dr. Harveen Bajwa for further details on root canal therapy, emergency dentistry, and tooth pain relief. We are be happy to answer your questions.
Common Root Canal Indicators
- Unprompted throbbing or pain
- Pain while chewing, eating, or biting
- Sensitivity or tenderness to hot or cold
- Swelling or tenderness near an infected tooth
- Severe breaks, chips, or injuries to tooth
The Root Canal Procedure
We start the procedure by using local anesthesia to keep you comfortable. We may also place a rubber dam around the infected tooth to protect your mouth and ensure that nothing falls to the back of your throat while we work. Using specific techniques and advanced equipment, the infected tooth pulp is removed. Prevention of further infection requires cleaning and filling of the root. We may take x-rays or use other instruments to make sure that there is no infection left.
Finally, we begin the steps necessary to restore the tooth. In most cases, we recommend placing a crown to protect and strengthen your tooth.
Root canal treatment requires skill and is a time-consuming procedure and most courses of treatment could involve two or more visits. Dr. Bajwa will thoroughly discuss the pre and post process details during your initial consultation.
Dr. Bajwa will be happy to discuss your treatment options with you at your convenience.
Periodontal scaling and root planing is the most common and conservative form of treatment for periodontal disease. This technique allows us to clean between teeth and gums, all the way down to the roots, and is the most effective way to treat periodontal disease before it becomes severe.
Periodontal disease (also referred to as periodontitis or gum disease) occurs when bacteria gets into the gumline, slowly destroying it and ultimately leading to tooth loss if left untreated. There are often warnings of periodontal disease, including bad breath, reddening of the gums or bleeding from the gums when brushing your teeth. More serious symptoms include tender or swollen gums, spaces or pus between teeth and the gumline, and receding gums that make your teeth look longer. If you need the best periodontal scaling Methuen has to offer, contact us today!
Common Gum Disease Indicators
- Receding gums making the teeth appear “longer”
- Depressions in the gums, or holes between the teeth and gum tissue
- Inflammation and discoloration along the gum line
- Deteriorating or discolored tooth structure
- Tooth loss or tooth movement
Scaling and Root Planing Procedure
Dental scaling occurs with manual hand instruments, ultrasonic instruments or both. Dr. Bajwa will start the procedure with a thorough examination of your mouth. Elimination of plaque bacteria is done by an ultrasonic scaling device using sonic vibrations. The ultrasonic scaling device removes tartar (calculus), plaque and biofilm from the tooth surface and underneath the gum line.
Root planing involves scaling of the root surface in detail to decrease inflammation of the gum tissue. She will then scales the root surface to smooth out rough target areas, eliminating plaque and biofilm development.
Dental scaling and root planing may take two to four visits based upon the level of oral disease in the mouth and as with all conditions, the earlier intervention happens the more successful and easier treatment will be.
Invisalign® is an innovative solution to having straighter teeth without having to wear metal braces. You will have custom-made series of clear and sometimes removable aligners for you and only you.
Invisalign® Treatment Procedure
Dr. Bajwa will first perform an evaluation and will help you determine if Invisalign® is a good option for you. If the procedure is needed, she will start by taking x-rays, pictures and impressions of your teeth. Invisalign® will use these impressions to create a digital 3-D image which she will discuss with you and map out a precise treatment plan.
Using the same technology Dr. Bajwa will be able to show you a virtual representation of how your teeth will move with each stage of treatment. After that, the aligners are made and you will receive a series of Invisalign® trays that you will use over the treatment period. Once every two weeks, you will discard the set you are wearing and replace it with the next tray in the series. Each set is a bit different from the last one, ensuring a gradual progression of teeth realignment over a period of about 9 to 15 months. For best results and a timely outcome, you should wear your aligners for 20 to 22 hours per day, throughout your entire treatment.

If you experience a dental emergency, be sure to call our practice as soon as possible. Dental emergencies like chipped or broken a tooth can be a traumatic experience. It’s very important that you see a dentist immediately, even if the tooth is just slightly chipped. If you have knocked out a tooth, keep it clean in a cup of water or milk and avoid handling the root. In some cases you may be able to put the tooth back into the socket by biting down on a clean paper towel for around 15-20 minutes provided there is no damage to microscopic structures that can help bond the tooth back together.
